MX records......question
"simon via WinServerKB.com" <u11670[ at ]uwe> 6/19/2007 11:36:45 AM
Hi Guys

This is related to something I posted in the exchange>connectivity group.

In a nutshell the DNS question is..............can you have an MX record
resolving to a HOST record in a different DNS zone?

like can I have a domain registered with godaddy for instance and point the
MX record to my no-ip.biz HOST record so it resolves to my exchange server. I
am trying to setup exchange without having a static public IP, if there is
another way please advise.

Or can I create the host A record on godaddy and have a CNAME pointing host.
godaddy.com to my no-ip.com Host record. Would this either work, or more
improtantly fail when my public ip changed?

I am confused, just started getting my head round exchange

Yes. The name of the record must be n the ZONE of the same name, but
the VALUE or DATA can point to a DNS name in any zone/domain.

This is entirely commmon for ISPs who handle email for customers:

smtp.company.com -->>> mail.isp.com

Yes, but generally you should use the MX records directly to an A record
(MX is already a form of alias although few people ever mention that) if
possible.

Reasonable crossposting of a single message is ENCOURAGED when you
have a problem you think crosses groups -- rather than posting the same
messages
(or similar) but different copies to multiple groups.
