99% of the time this is caused by incorrectly using your ISP or other
external DNS server IP in TCP/IP. You must use only the internal DNS
server's IP, usually the DC's, address for DNS, in TCP/IP on all members of
an Active Directory domain.
The other 1% of the time is split up among various reasons, including DC
being unable to register its addresses and services in DNS because of an
incorrect Primary DNS suffix, Single-label DNS domain name or DHCP Client
service not running. I have also had some cases when the user didn't know
what the _msdcs.<ForestRootDomain> was for in DNS and deleted it.
The installation CD for Win2k and later OS's has a set of tools you can
install to diagnose many issues. One tool is Netdiag which can diagnose many
network and DNS problems. I recommend installing these tools on every DC and
Member Client. The Netdiag tool is OS dependant, so install the tools from
the original CD, and download updated tools from Microsoft.
If you have further problems or issues, please post your unedited ipconfig
/all from the DC and a problem client.
