DNS Setting Problem with Server 2003 and XP Marc 6/26/2007 9:28:02 PM We have a small domain with one controller that is also used for DNS and a Linksys wireless Internet router. The problem is when I set the XP PC to obtain DNS address automatically, the PC does not log into the domain and the DNS shows as the router address. When I set the PCs Preferred DNS IP to the domain controller IP and the Alternate DNS IP address to the router IP, the PC logs into the domain but then I get problems such as email that cannot find the email server. How should the DNS settings be set? Thanks for any help. Marc

Set the preferred DNS server to the Domain Controller, configure your AD DNS server (the DC) to forward requests and list either the router as the forwarder or your ISP's DNS servers as the forwarder. I installed the DC with DNS IP address: 192.168.1.100 subnet: 255.255.255.0 default G: 192.168.1.1 DNS : 192.168.1.100 2. I have a dynamic DSL router with wireless LAN IP address: 10.0.0.1 subnet: 255.255.255.0 DHCP server enable INTERNET IP: 138.X.X.X DNS : 71.X.X.X 3. In my forward DNS tab I try to use 10.0.0.1, 138.X.X.X and 71.X.X.X 4. The cable from the router is connected to the box in the only lan card that I have there. 5. What is missing?? The problem is not the DNS Settings, the problem is your router is not on the same subnet with the machine. Change the router to be on the 192.168.1.x subnet, or change the server to be on the 10.0.0.x subnet. -- Best regards, Kevin D.
