Move hosting to external site - DNS resolution not working
"Jan K. van Dalen" <vandjATmarkross.com> 5/22/2007 4:53:35 PM
Hi Everyone,

We have decided to move our web hosting to a provider (vs. doing it
internally).

1) Everything is working fine outside our trusted network.
2) I changed the www entry for the domain to a (A) record pointing to the IP
provided by the ISP.
3) When I ping from out trusted network www.[domainname].com it responds
fine and to the correct IP address.
4) When I try to go to the site using IE, it goes to never, never land.
5) When I try to Trace Route from our trusted network (tracert
www.[domainname].com) it displays the correct IP on the first line but then
it hangs on: 192.168.0.1 (we are using 192.168.0.1-254). This is true
regardless of the server/workstation we try (inside our trusted network).

Any ideas?

Couple of questions:
1) When you say never never land... does that mean it goes somewhere
else? Or just "page cannot be displayed"? What's the error exactly?
2) If you enter the public IP address of the website into IE... does
the page display then?
3) You stated you changed the www record to an A record. What's the A
record that you created? Is it www.<domainname>.com? You'll need to
type whatever that A record is in order to reach the site.

Hi Jan,

Also remember that Traceroute relies on ICMP and a lot if networks and ISP
have that blocked. It is not an issue if trace traffic doesn't respond,
though it does hamper your ability to troubleshoot.

I aggree with the suggestion that you should try to connect to the site by
IP address. This will at least tell you if you have a hosts entry or caching
getting in the way there.

You may also look for duplicate DNS entries using NSlookup.. If you are
getting a round robin response it can mess things up if it is bouncing from a
good host to an invalid one.
