Which zone is appropriate Primary, Secondary or Stub?
Zzzzzz <iscubafanatic[ at ]hotmail.com> 6/25/2007 4:09:10 AM
My external DNS is hosted with my ISP but I would like to create a
local host "A" record on my W2K3 DNS to point to a local intranet.
What type of zone do I create that won't interfere with internal
queries to external resources?

Example:

ISP hosts DNS including web server with hosts www.company.com and
company.com records
Local user types intranet.company.com into browser, local DNS resolves
to local web server 192.168.168.1
Local user types www.company.com or company.com they get the external
web site hosted at ISP

I created a primary zone but when a user attempts to go to www.company.com
or company.com they get "The page cannot be displayed", for obvious
reasons. I also created a secondary zone but it doesn't allow the
creation of host "A" records, finally I tried a stub zone using the
external DNS servers but I get an error message saying "The zone
cannot be created, The request is not supported".

Should I just stick with a Primary even though it's not authoritative
and create a Host "A" record to point to the external web server for
www.company.com or company.com?

If company.com is your Active Directory domain name, you will need to create
a host named www in the company.com zone and give it the IP address of the
web site hosted at your hosting provider. You cannot access the site by
using http://company.com , the address for that name must resolve to the IP
address on all domain controllers that file sharing enabled. You can
however, create a web site in IIS on all domain controllers that redirect
that URL to http://www.company.com on the Home Directory tab of the website
properties.

Hi Kevin,

Thanks for the help.

One thing I should have mentioned is that the local domain is
company.local not .com.

Doh! I guess I wasn't awake yet.

Create a new Forward Lookup Zone, name the zone intranet.company.com, in the
intranet.company.com zone create one new host record, leave the name field
blank and give it the local IP of the web server.
