New DNS SErver Configuration Question
Bettie Claxton 5/11/2007 4:06:00 PM
I have 2 new 2003R2 server that I ahve installed DNS on. I have two old DNS
servers on W2000. Per KB article I set up the two new DNS servers a secondary
servers for the zones on one of the W2000 servers with the idea that later I
would promote one to be primary and get rid of the old server. Then I looked
at the second old W2000 DNS server and saw that it was also a primary. The
W2000 DNS's are AD integrated. Should I have set up the new DNS servers as
both primary as well? They are not in service yet so I can scrap all the
zones and easily start over.

The other question I have is that these two new servers are also going to be
promoted to DC's soon. A friend of mine said that I should delete the DNS on
the new servers and install after they are promoted. IS that true?

Hello Bettie,

If your new DNS server work as aspected in the moment, you don't have to
remove it before promoting to DC's. Just change them from secondary to active
directory integrated after promotion. During the promotion set the primary
DNS to one of your running DC's for a good AD replication.

Best regards

Bettie,

I would just remove the zones on the two new servers but leave the dns
service running. When you promote them to DCs, they will pick up the AD
Integrated zones. From there, you're golden.
