prohibit A Record from automatically updating
timmyplummer[ at ]gmail.com 5/24/2007 8:20:18 PM
Scenerio...

I'm running sharepoint on a server and I have 2 seperate sites running
on that machine. This is what I need.

1. nic1 ip-10.1.0.1 to register in dns as cascade
2. nic2 ip-10.1.0.2 to register in dns as metolius

Problem. The servername is cascade so DNS dynamically updates and
registers nic2 as cascade.

Question. How can I set nic2 to not update automatically in DNS? Is
there a setting I can tweak?

Thanks,

Tim

Set the NIC-2 to NOT register, and register that name manually.

Hi

Would a connection specific DNS suffix not resolve this? I could be wrong :-)

As I understand it you could configure a connection specific DNS suffix for
cascade on NIC1 and the same but use metolius on NIC2. Herb would this
achieve what the OP wants? I am not 100%

Thanks for any input

Regards

Si

It will not technically do what is asked, i.e., "prohibit ...updating"
unless you
somehow set it to a zone which doesn't accept dynamic updates and even
then why not just CHECK the BOX to prevent updates.

I use the connection specific DNS suffix when I want the machine to
register (e.g., an external NIC IP) but do not want it to register the
normal name with that (external) address.

cable.learnquick.com and dsl.learnquick.com for my two gateway out to
the Internet.

Then the internal NIC registers with the PRIMARY DNS Suffix (from the
System Control Panel) using just LearnQuick.Com

(All of these have the computer/server name prefixed for the full name.)
