DNS - WINS Forward Lookup
Niatross 6/7/2007 2:21:01 PM
I never understood this setting.

Why would you setup up a zone with WINS Forward lookup if your DHCP server
is already handing out WINS settings to the client?

Which way should I go? Should I remove the WINS scope options on my DHCP
server and setup a WINS Forward lookup on my DNS server?

I understand if I have Windows NT clients, then you should use the DHCP
Scope Options method, but if I don't have older clients, is there still an
advantage to using WINS Forward lookup on my DNS server?

I'm confused...

Thanks, Nihilator

The major advantage to using WINS lookups on the DNS zone is that clients
need only support WINS registration and not DNS registration for the client
name to be resolved in DNS. You can even use WINS proxying for clients that
don't support WINS registration, but still broadcast their NetBIOS name.

Re: DNS - WINS Forward Lookup

I'm still not getting the advantage.

Give me a scenario where I can see the "advantage" (In layman's terms).

This is what I see...

A WINS client (Windows NT, etc) is configured by DHCP to look at a specific
WINS server for resolution. The Windows NT client queries the WINS server and
receives an answer.

So why do I need to set a DNS zone for WINS forward lookup? I'm not getting
it. Give me a scenario where there would be an advantage to setup a DNS zone
for WINS forward lookup.

I'm used to this:

A DNS client (Windows 2K/XP/Vista) is setup to resolve via DNS by default
and looks for a DNS server. Older client resolve via WINS/NetBIOS and look
for a WINS server.

An older client that supports only WINS registration (ex: Windows NT) can be
set to look at a WINS server via DHCP scope WINS settings, so why go through
the hassle of removing DHCP scope WINS settings ansd setup your DNS zone to
look for a WINS server?

NT4 DNS has priority over NetBIOS resolution (Read the KB below)

You answered this yourself, DNS has name resolution priority over NetBIOS
resolution, so if the client can resolve the name in DNS, it need not
continue to NetBIOS. In addition, you can change the Name resolution
priority in older clients.

Would it not make sense to allow clients that cannot register in DNS be
resolvable in DNS?
The default name resolution tool is nslookup on 2k and later, nslookup can
only query DNS for names not WINS or NetBIOS.

How to change name resolution order on Windows 95 and Windows NT

Re: DNS - WINS Forward Lookup

so were dealing with speed then? Is that what your saying?

The order of the way the client resolves names is where the speed is. If I
set the WinNT PC pointing directly to my DNS server and do not configure the
TCPIP protocol with a WINS address, then the WinNT box will go to the DNS
zone and see the WINS forward lookup server and then resolve the NETBIOS
name. Correct?

Thanks, Nihilator

You would need to configure TCP/IP with the WINS server so that it can
register in WINS, or set up a WINS proxy on the network. A WINS proxy is a
client that uses NetBIOS Broadcasts to register clients that don't support
WINS registrations.

It will resolve the NetBIOS name by using the DNS suffix search, but this is
not the same as NetBIOS resolution for the Computer Browser Service, that is
strictly NetBIOS resolution by using broadcasts or WINS lookups.
