Hello,
i hava AD W2K with DNS and DHCP. Noticed that i couldnt connect remotely to some pc and after check in DNS there are some IPs associated to up to 3 workstations. This is occurring for about 10 IPs, all associated to more than one PC. In DHCP all PCs have one IP. Some IPs though have no associated computer name. Funny enough nobody seems to have problems with network applications. I could not connect to a shre drive on a workstation as No Permission (but i am admin) tks for help Alzana

Hello Alzana,
DNS entries will sometimes not be removed from the list, if the workstations will be powered off instead of shutdown. You can configure Scavenging on the server and your zones, so DNS will remove entries itself in your configured time frames.
For you're sharing problem please give also the Sharing and NTFS permissions from the folder.
Best regards

Hello Myweb,
tks for you input also on this issue. I can't bet on the way wks are shutdown but you mean powered off as just unplug the cable? No users would do that i guess... I tried anyway to force scavenging but it didnt change the situation

Hello MyWeb, the two DC are main and secondary DNS servers Then i add as additional 2 Unix application servers on which i have no control at all but anyway all 4 are in the local network
thanks Alzana

Hello MyWeb,
i think i found a post here that might relate to my prob (which also tells me why you mentioned the shutdown thingy) Here i copy the info
QUOTE This is more common for the reverse lookup zone than the forward lookup zone. Because the record owner for the same PTR IP may be a different machine. One machine cannot update or delete a record created by another machine. So if the PTR is owned by one machine that is suddenly disconnected the record cannot be updated or removed by the next machine to get the same IP address and therefore creates another PTR for the IP number. DHCP cannot remove the record either because it does not own the record but it can give the IP to another machine. I've seen that this more common if the PTR is owned by a laptop.
The resolution, is to have DNS more regularly scavenge old records or make the DHCP server the owner of all records by setting it to always update records. I don't know of any way you can force laptop users to always run ipconfig /release before disconnecting from the laptop. You can add Microsoft option 002 to release DHCP lease on shutdown which may help. Since I added this option DHCP removes its registrations at shutdown.

what do you think
