Need Help with Zones!!
Tim 5/24/2007 4:03:01 PM
Hi All,

I am trying to get host files from an existing zone to populate a newly
created zone when they connect to their specific geographical site. Let me
break it down as I am confused myself :o)

We have DC's located at each geographical site housing all of the DNS
records for the organization in one AD integrated zone called
"ent.samson.org" this zone replicates to all of the DC's running AD DNS at
the geographical sites.

Recently we are changing our infrastructure and adding seperate member
servers at each site running DNS that are not DC's. My goal was to create
site specific zones to house the host records for that site only and have all
the clients at that site query the local DNS server and not the DC's DNS for
local resolution, and for anything the local DNS servers could not handle
would get forwarded to central non AD integrated DNS servers with root hints
configured.

I built a DNS server for one of the remote sites and created a new zone
called "newberg.ent.samson.org" and set DHCP options to point all of the
clients DNS settings to get the new DNS servers IP addresses. I was hoping
that when these clients came online that new host records would populate the
new zone, but they are still going to the old AD integrated zone, since I
cannot move these records manually how can I have them created in the new
zone on the site server.

I can provide more information if needed, but am wondering if I am doing
this the wrong way, can anybody please help?

Give the clients in this site a connection specific DNS suffix of
newberg.ent.samson.org, then check the "Use this connection's DNS suffix in
DNS registration". BTW, DHCP option 015 will assign the connection DNS
suffix.

Also, you will need to delegate the name newberg, in the ent.samson.org zone
to the servers with the full newberg.ent.samson.org zone, so that it will be
seamless throughout the enterprise.
