I can't figure this one out, subdomains, delegating, etc windows 2003 server
smith <drsilk[ at ]gmail.com> 5/19/2007 2:18:31 AM
ok let me paint the picture, I have
external contoso.com and internal domain is corp.contoso.com and then
completley different across a vpn tunnel on another win2k3 dns server
is mycompany.com for both external and internal.

The mycompany.com dns works fine and can ping host1.corp.contoso.com
by name.
Question 1: how do I make it able to ping just host1 and know how to
route it to that domain instead of looking for it in
host1.mycompany.com?

Now my bigger problems are at corp.contoso.com, in that dns server the
first forward lookup zone is corp.contoso.com and that's it. There is
a webserver.corp.contoso.com that externally resolves to www.contoso.com
but if I create a cname for www to webserver internally it still
doesn't work as I expect cause when I try going to www.contoso.com
from the inside it tries the external ip which doesn't work.

I've tried creating a forward zone of just contoso.com but then it
creates automatically a zone beneath it called corp which if I
manually add A records to they just disappear as it tell me the zone
is delegated elsewhere. Plus it never seems to create the _msdcs or
_tcp etc stuff when I try just a contoso.com zone with the sub domain
under it.

What am I missing here? I would love for people at corp.contoso.com
to also be able to ping server5 and have it know to go to
server5.mycompany.com. Should that be a delegated zone and then that
would work?

You would need to configure mycompany.com into your DNS suffix search list.

Sorry about that, my Newsreader automatically adds that.
You would need to configure mycompany.com into your DNS suffix search list.
Another way to this so you don't need to configure and search multiple
domain DNS suffixes, is to have just one suffix, and configure that zone to
use WINS lookups for unknown hosts.
