2003 AD DNS
oviedo <dcoffaro[ at ]gmail.com> 5/14/2007 2:29:15 PM
2003 Server SP1
1 Forest, 1 Domain
5 Sites

At a specific time once a day the primary DNS (internal only) server
echos error messages complaining about not being able to complete
directory service enumeration, EventID 4004. Obviously at that time
the Active Directory is unhealthy.

Diagnostic Steps Taken:

nslookup
dcdiag
dnslint
replmon
addiag

Every tool listed above reports _zero_ errors. No changes have been
made to the AD or DNS is 12 months.

What is the next step moving forward to further diagnose the issue.

Thanks!

You say this happens at a specific time?
What is specific about this time?
What do you mean by "Primary DNS"?
If the zone is AD integrated, the zone would be a Primary zone on all DCs.

Does this server point only to itself for DNS?
These events usually only happen on a DC that points only to itself for DNS,
at startup.

Check your Directory Service Event log, what events are you seeing at this
time?

Thanks for the response Kevin.

It happens at 4:39AM
The DNS zone is AD Integrated.By primary I mean there are multiple
zones, but this zone is our internal working domain where all the AD
objects live.
Yes, this server points to itself and another DC in the respected
site. The machine has an uptime of 11 days. The problems started
occurring 4 days ago. Is this an issue that should be looked into?
In the Directory Services event log there are Information entries
regarding Online Defragmentation completing a full pass on the NTDS
database. Nothing out of the ordinary.

I've uninstalled the AV client to rule out any possible scans or re-
installation processes at night.

Any other suggestions would be great.

Cheers,

From a cmd prompt run dcdiag /c /v /e on both DCs. This test actually tests
both DCs, but sometimes there are communications issues one DC that isn't
apparent on the other.
