Hello Douglas,
If you work in a private iprange, i think you can not do it without configuring a forwarder. Maybe you can use the root hints, if you have a public ip address on your DNS server itself, which means it is directly connected to the internet. You are talking about your ISP,so i assume you don't have, so why not using it?
