Hello Douglas,

If you work in a private iprange, i think you can not do it without configuring
a forwarder. Maybe you can use the root hints, if you have a public ip address
on your DNS server itself, which means it is directly connected to the internet.
You are talking about your ISP,so i assume you don't have, so why not using
it?

Best regards

By default it should resolve internet names without a Forwarder by using its
Root Hints, if you don't have "Do not use recursion" checked on the
Forwarders tab or "Disable recursion" checked on the Advanced tab, AND your
firewall is not blocking port 53 TCP/UDP to all addresses on the internet.

You can also, bypass the Forwarder and Root Hints both if you install a
fully delegated Root zone on your DNS server. There are two ways to achieve
getting a fully delegated root zone on your DNS, one by creating a Primary .
zone using the directions in the KB below, the other by creating a secondary
.. zone one or more of the ICANN Root servers that allow transfers of the
Root zone.
These ICANN Roots allow root zone transfers:
192.228.79.201, 192.33.4.12, 192.5.5.241, 192.112.36.4, 193.0.14.129

Whatever method you choose to do, you have to make sure your firewall allows
it.
