2 network config on server
kelloggs 6/22/2007 5:26:02 PM
Hi,

I have a Windows 2k3 server std. ed. configured with 2 NICs. DNS and AD is
configured on the server.
One is configured for my local network - 192.168.X.X, while the other is
configured for my public network - 213.185.x.x
The problem I face is that whenever I run a ping from the server itself, the
server resolves its name to the public ip address. This is causing the server
to see itself with the public address.
What i want to achieve is for the server to recognize itself with the local
ip address alone.

On the local NIC, i configured a default gateway for the NIC while on the
public NIC, only the IP address, subnet mask and DNS entries were put.

Someone please help because my local systems are having issues communicating
with the server.

I also have removed all DNS entries on the server that point the server name
to the public IP address.

Make sure DNS listens only on the internal IP address, Disable NetBIOS over
TCP/IP on the external NIC.
In Network Connections Control Panel, Advanced Menu>Advanced settings
Move the internal NIC to the top of the connections pane and clear the file
sharing and Client for MS Networks bindings check box on the external NIC.

The internal NIC must not have a Defaul Gateway, Default gateway should on
be on external NIC, which points the way outside your network.

Is this a RAS server too?

Hello Kevin,

Thank you so much for this reply. After carrying out the suggestions below,
the server started resolving correctly.
The only thing is that i have Symantec Antivirus installed on the server
which also acts as the primary server for the antivirus. All client systems
on the network connect to the server.
I however checked opened the software and still noticed that the server
still sees itself with the public IP address.
I however restarted the server and it seems to be ok.

If there are any changes or any more observations, I will let you know.

Thanks again, your comments and suggestions were very helpful!
