DNS/Wins not working after change!
rocketz21 5/6/2007 5:50:00 PM
We moved the domain controller and changed the settings for the Wins/DNS and
now neither the DNS/Wins is working. It won't let us add a new DNS zone
without errors regarding the active directory.

Is there some other address or setting I'm missing. Didn't think changing
the new dns/wins ip address would make it not work at all. The roaming
profiles won't load either.

Did change the dns/wins on the workstation.

Any help on this would be great.

This doesn't sound very specific.

First step, make sure that the DC can reach the other domain
controllers (by pinging them).

Look at the event log, see if there are any messages indicating a
problem - there should be!

Next step is to check DNS on the non-working domain controler,
and compare it to DNS on the working domain controllers.

Check replication using repadmin /showrepl from the support
tools (on the first cd).

Set the used DNS-Server on the non-working DC to a working DC.
run ipconfig /registerdns, restart the netlogon service.

If this doesn't resolve your issue, post ipconfig /all from all
your domain controllers, plus error messages from your event log.

There is only one DC in the network. Currently the server has been stuck at
"preparing network connections" for more than 25 minutes so I'll try my best
with the errors.

We stopped, then restarted DNS. After that all the DNS enteries were gone.
There was a red x error over the Wins.

I don't remember exactly the error in DNS (can't log on the server) there
was a message about a group could not connect or contact active directory
library.

I know it's vague, but without getting it to boot up at the moment, it's the
best info I have.

We moved the DC to another location in a new data center. I changed the
Wins ip add and modified a couple ip address in the DNS. When we booted it
up again, it took a while to load and there immediately were problems with
the wins and dns.

All the data/settings in active directory are there and there doesn't appear
to be any problems with it.

This actually makes it easier, because we can exclude Replication
as an issue.

Just wait a few moments, it should come up at some point in time.

Then, make sure to adjust all IP-Adresses in the DNS-Zone
manually, if that is possible. If it is not, something else is
wrong - without more input it's also very hard to
tell.

If it doesn't come up, try DSRM (F8 at boot). You won't be able
to edit DNS data if you're using AD integrated zones, but you can
review the event log.

Here is the main error message I'm receiving in event viewer:

"active directory was unable to establish a connection with the global
catalog"

I also have tried uninstalling DNS and WINS and reinstalling it.

One DC?
Did it IP address change?
Is it using its own address for DNS and WINS?
At the very minimum 127.0.0.1and then, on the Interfaces tab, set DNS to
listen on all addresses.
