Moving AD DNS from a Windows 2000 to 2003 server
"Chris G" <chris.gould[ at ]atoc.org> 4/19/2007 7:56:51 AM
Hi there,

I have mograted my domain to 2003 but still have the old DC which is Windows
2000. This is running AD Dns but I want to move it to the new DC that is
Windows 2003. This is also now the PDC/Schema/Infrastrcture master.

What are the pitfalls? Does anyone have a best practise to move DNS from
Windows 2000 to 2003?

Many thanks

Chris

Is it an AD integrated DNS?

If so, then simply add DNS to as many DCs as you like and the zones will
automatically replicate to them.

Once you have your clients pointing to the new DNS server(s) then you can
remove the Windows 2000 computer.

If you only have a small domain with a few DC's its best practice to make
every DC a DNS server, point the DNS server settings to themselves first and
the PDC emulator FSMO role holder as the secondary.

Did you, 1, migrate to a new domain or did you 2, promote the new DC into
the same domain as a replica DC?
If 1, allow zone transfers from the zones on the Win2k zones to the IP of
the Win2k3 and create secondary zones, then convert the zone from secondary
to primary(Do not store in AD), then convert the Primary to ADI by storing
the zone in AD. (You cannot convert directly from secondary to ADI)
If 2, Simply install DNS on the Win2k3 and let AD replication replicate the
zone to the Win2k3, no zone transfers are needed.

Did you upgrade the domain? (I hope).

If so you can just make the new DC a Secondar if the old one is Primary OR
just install DNS server if the old DNS-DC is AD Integrated. In the latter
case when you install DNS the zone should just automagically appear on the
second DC.

There are 5 Master roles however in a forest -- you have mentioned only 3.

Moving or adding the DNS to Win2003 is trivial and practically without
pitfalls
OTHER THAN just making mistakes of forgetting to get the basics right --
i.e.,
setting the clients to USE the new DNS.

Also, you have made no mention of GCs. In a single domain forest every DC
should be a GC.

And if you have more than one subnet (i.e., broadcast domain) then you
should
also have WINS Server and every machine a WINS client, esp. DCs.

Do you have more than one DC (when you finish)? A Domain with only one
DC is extremely precarious.
