Hi Barb,
Posted a while back about not getting premium content with my Sony Vaio with CableCard. Problem seems to be intermittent. Have worked with Sony and they swear it is a signal strength problem. Have also been working with a very diligent Comcast support tech in the CableCard area. I told him about you and he may reach out to you within Comcast channels. I believe his name is Steven. I think he will be very receptive to any knowledge you can lay on him. I am his third Vista CableCard box he has worked with. At least one other was a Velocity Micro box with the same issues.
We are now setting up a tech visit to test singal strength.

A few other random questions:
1. What role do the guide listings (if any) play in DRM? The reason I ask is that in speaking with Comcast, I should be using Northwest Area 2,3 Digital listings, however, these don't line up with the signals I am receiving. If I use Southweswt 1,4 digital, the listings match what I see on my tv.
2. When I look at the "Card Status" section of the ATI stats, I see the following message:
Download Status Segments left to download: 0 State: Wait For First Download Segment Timed out waiting for download
Being a network person by trade, generally time outs are not a good thing
3. The IP address the OCUR device shows in the status is a private IP (192.168.x.x) but not on my local network (also has a 29 bit subnet massk). Problem?
Yep, I am grasping at straws at this point.

You never replied to my last post during the last "round" --
"I should have asked you this question first - about a month ago you posted info on your firmware for me and it was at 1.14. At that time I advised you to check with Sony for any upgrade. It's posted at http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-list.pl?mdl=VGXXL3&UpdateType=Everything " did you update the firmware???
also, you mentioned that the premiums came back after the machine had been off at night - which sounds like heat/ventilation.
I have external DCTs - they are on 24/7 and rock solid.
I think Velocity shipped some **early** boxes with the same firmware you received, BTW.

have you tried the southwest 1.4 digital guide? it won't hurt anything to do this. you can always change back. should not impact your problem.
the status is showing the last error message but that the process was completed. don't think this is related.
is network discovery turned on for the ati device?

try to answer all the questions here:
1. Yes, I am using SW 1,4 Digital. Otherwise my son gets MTV instead of Cartoon Network ;-)
2. Yes, I did upgrade the firmware.
3. After I get the timeout error, the card cycles through the "download segments" process again and ultimately fails again.
4. If by "Is the ATI deviced configured for network discovery" means is it set to use DHCP, the answer is yes. And since it does not have an APIPA (automatic priviate IP addressing) address, it must be talking to a DHCP server. And an ipconfig shows a DHCP server that is not my home router. I am assuming that this is used for the out of band communication and comes directly from Comcast.
5. The ventilation issue sounds plausible, although the box (when not sitting in the middle of my living room floor as it is now for troubleshooting/easy access to the coax connecter/CableCard) has more than a foot clearance behind, 8 inches above and inches to either side.

None. DRM isn't tied to guide in any way.
> 2. When I look at the "Card Status" section of the ATI stats, I see the > following message: > > Download Status > Segments left to download: 0 > State: Wait For First Download Segment Timed out waiting for download > > Being a network person by trade, generally time outs are not a good thing
I don't know exactly what this means, but it sounds to me like the CableCard wanted to perform firmware upgrade, but couldn't start for some reason. This could indicate weak signal indeed. If the firmware uprade was scheduled to take place over out-of-band tuner then weak signal could be the source of your trouble. Out-of-band tuner on OCUR is a bit too sensitive.
This could also indicate an unhappy CableCard. Have Comcast check your signal level (too strong signal is bad as well). If you have similar issues with good signal have them replace your CableCard if they haven't done that already.
> 3. The IP address the OCUR device shows in the status is a private IP > (192.168.x.x) but not on my local network (also has a 29 bit subnet > massk). > Problem?
Unlikely. If there was a problem with network configuration then it would be detected and OCUR would be reconfigured. Even if reconfiguration was unsuccessful the tuner wouldn't be available to Windows at all, in which case Media Center would display "Tuner Not Found".

ask them to send a tech to check your levels. they may need to adjust/rewrite/pad/add an amplifier somewhere. let's postpone discussion of what shows in network as a device for now.
I see that Max has joined the conversation. That's good news for you.
