I just purchased an HP m8010y Media Center PC that came with an ATI TV Wonder
OpenCable Receiver (1049) digital cable tuner and have been unable to pair to
a Comcast CableCard. I receive Authorization Failure 1070 every time I try
to pair the card. Comcast has been out three times and say they've never
seen one of these before. I receive some standard channels and some HD
channels, but no premium content and don't get a lot of standard content.
I am running Vista Home Premium for Digital Cable, Quad Core Processor, 2Gb
RAM, nVidia GeForce 8500 GT Video Card. System also has a Hauppauge WinTV
418 video capture card in it, but this is not being used for the cable
channels--everything goes through the ATI TV Wonder external tuner.
Has anyone had success with this combination of hardware?
Any help would be appreciated.

do you have an SA or Motorola CableCard? Has Comcast tried more than
one card? What are your RF levels? Did you add splitters? Did the
techs check the levels?
Where are you seeing the error message?
Did you reconfigure the TV signal after the cable card was
installed?
What state do you live in?

It is a Motorola Part No. 469140-003-00 card. They have tried three cable
cards at this point, all Motorola. I have one splitter, but all three Techs
that checked said the signal levels were strong. Signal Level shows 41 dBmV,
SNR 28 dB.
The error message appears when I access CableCard Diagnostics in Media
Center...Tasks...Settings...TV...TV Signal...Activate Digital Cable...Scan
for CableCard....Tuner 1. It also appears when I access CableCard
Diagnostics in Media Center...Tasks...Settings...TV...TV Signal....Digital
Tuner Diagnostics...CableCard Pairing. It says "There was a technical
problem during the authorization process. This product may have some
component failure or may not be designed to be compatible with digital cable
television services."
I have tried reconfiguring TV signal several times, both by shutting down PC
and restarting, and not shutting down. What is strange is that the PC Doctor
hardware testing included with the PC shows no signal from the TV Wonder, but
I am able to see channels 2-20 and some HD channels in Media Center.

I tried connecting without the splitter and my signal is now at -7dBmV.
Still no CableCard pairing

ok, you have a motorola head end.
the Activate failure you are seeing is not necessarily on the cable
side but sounds like you are unable to activate on the internet
server that authorizes all the DRM bits. this is separate from the
pairing Comcast does in the DAC.
what firewalls and so on are you running? how are you connected to
the Internet?
what firmware version is in the ATI DCT? are both LEDs green?

ATI Firmware Version is 1.15.2007.04051, Apr 5 2007.
Running Norton Internet Security Firewall. Internet connection is DSL
through Cisco 678 router with cabled connection to a Linksys 10/100 workgroup
switch.

If you can't get it working with Norton Internet Security installed, remove

NIS is known to create this kind of problem. You need to uninstall
it (not just disable it) to see if your problem clears. Once you
have confirmed that the problem is resolved, check with the Symantec
folks and see if they have guidance on reinstalling and what ports
to open. UDP 5001-5006, UDP 1900, TCP 2869, TCP 554, UDP 5757-5772
should be the ones, but I can't assist you with a Norton product as
I won't use their software.

Totally uninstalled NIS and problem is exactly the same. Rebooted several
times, tried removing CableCard and reinstalling. powered down cable tuner
then repowered, removed digital cable tuner from device manager and let Vista
reinstall it. This is a tough one.

Yes, installed that update about a week ago. Don't see anything in the logs
that seems to point to this error. I think you are right about the internet
server, because when I look at IP Services in Media Center, there are no IP
addresses listed and no address for the default gateway. It seems no
connection is being made to the internet. Also, when I hunt for network
services in Media Center, it finds nothing.
