You can insert an animated GIF into a Word file. But the only way you'll see the animation is to save the document as a web page and view it in a web browser.
Don't trust everything you read in the help file... some things in there may be true only under certain circumstances, but the help omits the limitations; and a few things are simply wrong, maybe because the help had to be written long before the features were finalized.
