Perhaps the text in the Normal template has been inadvertently formatted as hidden? A quick fix is to exit Word, locate normal.dotm and rename the file. The next time you start Word, a new copy of normal.dot with the factory default settings will be recreated.
Note that in order to find normal.dotm you can use Windows Find. Be sure to search hidden files and folders.
