The trial you've installed is a Retail OneNote, and the product you've bought is Home and Student. The functionality is exactly the same, but licensing is different so it's impossible to use the key from one product to activate the other (don't ask me why it should be so complicated, I don't get it myself).
Basically you either need to reinstall OneNote on your machine to have H&S version installed and then use the key your brother has sent you (if you can borrow a CD from a fellow student of yours to install, it's fine because the activation by the key you've bought is what matters; otherwise your brother will have to mail the disk to you). Note: reinstall won't affect your notes, you'll have full access to them after the reinstall.
Or you need to buy a retail key (either by converting OneNote online, or by buying another box) and use it to activate you currently installed version of OneNote.
