Certainly Word can make indexes without any external package -- I doubt that there's any word processor that can't index its own documents.
Look up the Word help topic "Create an Index" (or point your browser at http://office.microsoft.com/assistance/hfws.aspx?AssetID=HP051892831033&CTT=1&Origin=EC010227131033&QueryID=QCgEPKSwI0&respos=5&rt=2) for instructions. You can also read http://word.mvps.org/faqs/formatting/Createindex.htm.
