Page numbers in word 2003 are gone in word 2007

I have a document created in word 2003. It has page numbers i, ii, iii etc in
the foreward and page numbers with chapter numbers later in the document
(1-1, 1-2, 2-1, etc)

When I open it in 2007 the page numbers are all gone - every single page has
the same thing now and it just says {PAGE } where it used to show the actual
page number.

I found an older computer with 2003 on it still and the document opens fine
and shows the page numbers - word 2007 is messing it up.

You must have accidentally hit the keyboard combination that will toggle the
display fields codes (for example, {PAGE}) instead of the result. Ctrl+A
(select everything) and Alt+F9 (toggle field code) should get you back to
the results you are looking for. This behavior is the same in W2003.

Thanks, but no that is not the cause.

I have opened the exact same file in word 2003 and word 2007 - without
touching a single key and simply scrolling down --- the 2003 version has page
numbers while the 2007 version shows the field code.

I tried toggling the field codes yesterday and it didn't work (alt-F9 and
the right click method) - but today it did. I'm not sure what has changed or
what I did wrong before...

So while not solving the "why" of my problem, it appears that the problem
is solved nonetheless.

thanks
