Word 2007 - Table of Contents
"Daddy" <daddy[ at ]invalid.invalid> 11/10/2008 6:44:15 AM
I've successfuly created a table of contents in Word 2007, but I can't get it to work properly:

1- If I try to click on a page number, the whole table becomes shaded and I don't go to the page in question.

2- If I click on or near a heading my table becomes surrounded by a blue rectangle with a tiny toolbar on the top left. Only way to get rid of it is to close the document and re-open it.

There's something fundamental I'm missing here...what is it?

Thanks for your help.

And to add to Doug's reply, the TOC become grey because it is a field and
selected fields are shaded grey by default.

Thanks to you both.

Unless I'm having one of those 'senior moments' ;-) I believe that in my
former version of Word (2002), I used to be able to simply click on a page
number or heading in a TOC and be taken directly to the heading in question.
Can't I do this in Word 2007? Ctrl+click was used to follow a hyperlink in
W2002, and even then a tooltip popped up to tell you what to do.

Also: Is there a way to make the blue rectangle w/toolbar disappear other
than by re-opening the document?

If Ctrl+click was required to follow a hyperlink, then it was required for
TOC hyperlinks as well, but you can disable this in the Word Options in 2007
just as you could in the Options in 2002.

Now in Word Options, Advanced, 4th setting from the top.

I understand the part about ctrl+click now.

So it looks like I'm stuck with the blue rectangle with the mini-toolbar?

Daddy.

Okay, this is not funny anymore. I no longer have to CTRL+click to go to a chapter heading - I just click and I'm all set. But...

1- It takes noticeably longer (4 or 5 seconds) to open my document since I inserted my TOC.

2- The very first time I rest my mouse pointer on my TOC, the TOC becomes shaded, even though I set 'field shading' to Never;

3- The first time I click on a heading, I can count to 5 from the time I click on the heading to the time Word actually goes to the heading;

4- When I return to my TOC, it is still surrounded by a light blue rectangle with a mini-toolbar at the top left, with icons for 'insert table' and 'update table'. Silver lining: At least now, when I click on a heading, Word goes there instantly.

I'm not blaming you for any of this, of course, but what is up with Word 2007? I don't need this sillyness, and I'm ready to decide that Word 2007 broke tables of contents.

Solved: Word 2007 - Table of Contents
"Daddy" <daddy[ at ]invalid.invalid> 11/11/2008 7:31:36 PM
If anyone is still following this thread...

Turns out I was right. According to Microsoft's Office website:

"When you click in an automatic TOC, it will be displayed in a light blue
box. This is okay; it's a visual cue to let you know that it's an automatic
TOC. Then when you move the pointer away from the TOC, the entries will turn
gray and you will see the cursor where you initially clicked."

The light blue box and the gray shading -- which is unrelated to the field
shading setting in Word options -- are part of the table of contents and
will not go away. Well, that's not exactly true. They can be made to
disappear if you close and re-open the document, and then remember /not to
click/ in the TOC.

So if you send your document to someone, and that person actually clicks on
a page number in the table of contents, they'll be met with the blue box and
the shading and they'll probably think there's something wrong with your
document.

The box and shading can also be removed if you view the document in Reading
View. However, Reading View does not display the document as it would appear
if printed. So it's not appropriate for viewing documents with complex
formatting.

It's not for me to judge, but in my opinion, it's a broken feature.
