Hello,
I have a document that has been set up using styles. All has been fine, but this morning, I opened the document map so I could jump down to another part of the document, and noticed that there were far more "Heading 1" styled paragraphs than there should have been.
When I looked more closely, I noticed that Word has picked random paragraphs throughout the document, and got it into its head that these are Headings. If I click on them in the document map, Word takes me to them as though they were headings.
What's really weird is that the actual text is still marked up in the Normal style. It has the same visual formatting as before, and if I click in some of this supposed Heading 1, the drop-down on the toolbar shows it as Normal. If I choose Format->Styles, the drop-down there also shows it as Normal.
One major problem that this is causing is that the auto-generated table of contents is now full of all sorts of stuff that shouldn't be there.
Anyone any idea what has happened, and (more to the point) how I fix it? I have been working on this document for over three years, and I really can't face the thought of going through and checking every one of these changes by hand. There are hundreds of pages here. I have no idea why this suddenly happened this morning. I haven't touched the styles in ages, and this change seems to have affected the entire document, not just the small section where I was working today.
TIA for any help

[Quoted Text] Thanks for that very useful and somewhat worrying article! What I don't understand is why Word never did this before. As I said, I've been working on this doc for years, and I use the doc map a lot. I wonder why it waited until today to add the autostyles.
It's a shame the document map is so badly broken, I find it really useful for moving around a long document. The outline idea works OK, but I don't find it as quick and easy as the doc map. Still, looks like I better get used to it eh?
Thanks again

I *think* if you disable "Define styles based on my formatting," you reduce the risk of damage by Document Map.

OK, thanks for the tip. Where do I find this option? I looked under options, and I looked in the styles bit, but I couldn't see where this was.
Thanks a lot

It's on the AutoFormat As You Type tab of Tools | AutoCorrect Options (see also http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/TameAutoFormat.htm).
