Hi everybody,
for some reason my shortcut Word icon has gone and has been replaced with the Windows generic icon. I tried to suppress this shortcut and recreate another one, to no avail.
I also tried to right click on this shortcut > Properties but the change icon button is greyed.
How can I recuperate the original MS Word icon?
I have Vista Ultimate and Office 2007.
Many thks for your kind help.
Brgds Daniel

Start, Run (Winkey+R) and type in
winword /r
and press enter. Nothing will seem to have happened but it 'should' reregister Word in Windows and all the correct associations should return.

Hi Terry,
many thanks for your message. Unfortunately that didn't work.
for your kind information, here are additional details I posted on a Vista NG, for I then thought it may not be a "Word" problem :
QUOTE For some reason my Word shortcut icon has gone and has been replaced with the Windows generic icon. I tried to suppress this shortcut and recreate another one, to no avail. To do this I did Start > Programs > Microsot Office > MS Word 2007 >> Right click > Send to > Desktop (Create a shortcut).
Doing this I create a shortcut with the generic icon, not the original, default Word 2007 icon.
I also tried to right click on this shortcut > Properties but the "change icon" button is greyed.
Interestingly, If I create an icon from the Winword file in Program files, I do get a proper icon, with the label "shortcut to ...".
In other words, it seems that the problem only affects, as far as I know, the Word shortcut icon created from the Start > Programs menu.
The icon in the quick launch bar is OK. The icons associated with the word documents in Explorer are OK.
If I copy the icon in the quick launch bar onto the desktop, the default Word icon is replaced with the generic one.
and of course I cannot correlate this new problem with anything I could have done, except, may be, rearranging all my icons on the desktop after they had been "reshuffled" for some reason (this happens now and again).
How can I recuperate the original MS Word icon? UNQUOTE
So, I created a new shortcut directly from the Winword file in Program files, which is OK. However I would have liked to know how to repair the above mentioned problem, just in case it happens again, and also because I like to learn from experience...
With best regards, Daniel

When you expand Start, Run, Microsoft Office, are all the correct Office Icons displayed? If you go to Program Files/Microsoft Office/Office 12, are all the icons, especially Winword.exe all correctly displayed?

Hi Terry,
Thank you so much for your time and concern. I really appreciate it.
Indeed, when I expanded Start... all the correct Office icons displayed were OK.
Same for Program files/MS/ Office 12...
Now I must tell you that since this morning things went back to normal in the sense that I tried for the Nth time to recreate this shortcut by expanding Start > Programs > Microsot>> Office > MS Word 2007 >> Right click > Send to > Desktop (Create a shortcut), and now it works!
I just don't know what I have done which could have repaired Vista or Winword. I simply used Word, Excel and IE, just as usual. I wish I knew, because this phenomenon may happen again.
So, many thanks again for your kind help.
With best regards,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,
Problems with specific icons being replaced by generic ones sometimes indicate a corrupted or too-small Windows icon cache.
See http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/117229-icon-cache-rebuild.html (for Vista) or http://www.windowsnetworking.com/kbase/WindowsTips/WindowsNT/AdminTips/TroubleShooting/HowtoRepairtheIconCache.html (for XP), or ask Google about "icon cache" for many other articles.

Hi Jay,
many thanks for your message. Most useful info. Will try this if my problem occurs again. I know this was not a major issue, but it really bothered me, because it was there, in front of my nose, all the time...
Thanks again and best rgds, Daniel

If there is such a memo, I don't have it. I have been looking myself for better instructions since this is now a goal. If you do find something, please let me know.
