If you are using Word 2007 then there's a Redaction add-in you can use: http://blogs.msdn.com/microsoft_office_word/archive/2008/09/22/a-word-2007-redaction-tool.aspx For Word 2003 here's a link to the add-in but most have been unsuccessful using it. Unfortunately if you encounter an error when running it there's little you can do: http://blogs.msdn.com/brian_jones/archive/2005/08/03/447421.aspx Note that either add-in will redact the content. They replace each character with a black box (or shading - I don't recall) but it's a replacement and not a format or overlay. Once it's redacted the original content will be removed from the document and no longer contained in the document.
