I am inserting captions for tables in Word 2003 , but the numbering isn't consistent. I need them to say:
Table 1, Table 2, Table 3a, Table 3b, Table 3c, Table 4, Table 5a, Table 5b, Table 6 etc.
Is there an easy way to do this or is this not possible using captions?
Thanks

In Chicago style, at least, one big table would be called Table 3, and it would have subheads that cross the entire table labled A. and B.

This kind of numbering would require manual intervention. Yould have to adjust the underlying SEQ field code, and create a separate SEQuence for the a, b, c, ... letters (or type them in).
Press Alt+F9 to show/hide field codes in Word. Table caption numbers will appear similar to: { SEQ Table }. To repeat a number, you can add the \c switch to the corresponding field. Use F9 to update (or switch to Print Preview and back to your current view). Use Alt+F9 to hide field codes again.
Note that manual changes to field codes may be lost if you change, say, the numbering options for captions.
