Sync with an removable (USB) drive?
Kevin Buchs 2/12/2007 3:40:01 PM
If I want to carry a notebook from work to home and back via a USB drive, is
there a way I can use the Sync capability? I don't want the notebook only
stored on the USB drive but I want it on a local, networked drive as the
primary location.

Is this best done with Briefcase in XP?

Make the notebook on the usb drive, but set up the machine at work to
keep a backup on the networked drive. Optionally also set up the home
machine to keep a backup on a storage card or similar if so so equipped.
This would give you quite a few copies and is possible by default with
ON 2007.

Sorry to not have previously stated I am using ON 2007

This isn't quite what I was thinking. I'd like the working copy to be on my
local storage (fast network storage) so I don't pay the penalty of slow
access to the USB drive. If there was a background sync going on with the
USB drive when installed that would be great. Also, I may not always have
the drive available or inserted.

OneNote will work off of your local cache and sync with the USb device
as required - this will even work fine off of slower jump drives, etc.
If the USB drive is not available you can go ahead and work as you want
and sync later. Just keep the notebook open in OneNote.

Well, the network storage is primary storage at work. It is backed up while
the local disk is not. It is also policy that work documents for projects
get stored in specific locations. I have share the notebook but as far as I
know, no one else in my work group is using ON. If my work here would come
to an unexpected, abrupt end, it may be possible that someone else will need
to access the data. In addition, the network location has Windows
Permissions/ACLs set such that the availability can be controlled. But, see

for concerns regarding that.
