Highlite the stubborn cells, right-click and choose "Format Cells". Choose the "Border" tab. Choose "Automatic" for color (or any other color you desire). Here's the tricky part that drove me nuts for a few minutes...after you have chosen the color, make sure to click the borders that you want in the border graphic to the right of the color drop-down menu (or you can click on the "Outline" and/or "Inside" boxes above it). The borders in that small graphic will change to the color you chose in the drop-down. Then click OK. I found that without that last step, it reverts back to the originial color. Seems kind of silly to me, but that's how it works.
