We have Office 2000 Pro (with Access) on some computers, and Office 2000 Small Business (with Publisher) on others. We now want Publisher on one of the former computers, but when I ran Setup from the Office 2000 SB CD, I get the error message "Another version of this product is already installed. Installation of this version cannot continue. ..."
I'm reluctant to uninstall Office 2000 Pro on the former computer. Is there any way of bypassing the error message, so that we can install Publisher on the Office 2000 Pro machine?

2000 Small Business version is a OEM version and is tied to the computer that it came with. You cannot install it to another computer. Afaik it will die with the present computer that it is installed on.

Thanks for your reply, Peter, but our Office 2000 SB version is *not* OEM.

Because they were purchased independently of any hardware purchase, the retailer did not say anything about OEM and there is nothing on the sleeve to indicate that they might be OEM. See also the post today from JoAnn Paules, MVP Microsoft [Publisher] in the thread "Office 2007 Laptop and desktop".
Can we get back to my original question? -- is there any way of getting around the error message, or do I really have to uninstall Pro and install SB?

Office 2000 SB was and is OEM. It is tied to the computer that it is installed to. It will also die with that computer. Sigh.... I answered you in my previous post in this thread that you are not able to install Publisher from the Off 2000 SB version because of this. It is possible that you purchased it separately which was possible but you purchased a OEM version not a retail one. Small Business versions of Office and especially Office 2000 SB was only available as a OEM
To get around that error message there is 2 possibilities
(1) Purchase a stand alone version of Publisher preferably not an OEM version (2) Remove Office 2000 SB (it is not supported anymore) and purchase Office 2003 with the Publisher. And if I am not mistaken Office 2007 has discontinued Publisher

Publisher is available in Office 2007 pro and above. It just isn't available in the basic package, home and student and Standard
