I am running Office 2007. When I save a new file in a directory, all that's shown in the directory are files of the same "file type" as the one I'm saving.
I need to be able to see all of the file names regardless of the file type. How do I get the "Save As" window to show all of the files.
Thanks
|
|
It doesn't, only the Open files dialog does that.

Err no, the OP clicks on the drop-down box in "Files of Type" and ALL file types are shown. Just as it's always been...

there is no "All Files(*.*)" in Save As on my system, only in the Open file dialog.

You can't DO a "Save as" as ALL FILES can you? I assumed the OP was talking about showing all file types that he could save the document as.

Some programs do allow that("Save as" as ALL FILES), Notepad for instance.

Bob I....you've got the correct understanding of my question.
Am I wrong in remembering that in prior versions users could view all of the file types in a directory when saving a file?
I hope someone from Microsoft weighs in on this. I still believe there must be a way to do that.

I don't remember 2003 doing that, I could be wrong, but I don't remember it. And many programs don't, but some do. If it is that important to see, the Open dialog will show you, as will Windows Explorer.

Not sure about 2003....XP did it. I can do the work-arounds you've suggested but they add another step to something that used to be very simple. Unfortunately, I'm running into that a lot with the new version.

I'm not from Microsoft (which, btw, seldom will you see someone from Microsoft here) but I can assure you that Word has never had All Files (*.*) listed in the Save As Type drop down. There are various file types available in the Save As Type drop down but not All Files (*.*). The reason for this is Word needs to know what format to use when creating/saving the file, such as Rich Text, Word Document, etc. The type of file you are saving is vital information and it can't create/save a file without it.
I suspect you are thinking of File/Open. Now, what you can do is in the Save As dialog box click the Up One Level button, right-click the folder in which you want to view all files, and then click Explore to open the Windows Explorer and view all files for the selected folder. -- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Beth Melton Microsoft Office MVP https://mvp.support.microsoft.com/profile/Melton What is a Microsoft MVP? http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/gp/mvpfaqs

To understand....do this from Excel 2007....
1) Use Windows Explorer and find a directory on your computer that has files in it of different file types....like Excel.xls and Word.doc and Powpoint.ppt
2) Then, open Excel 2007 ....start a new document.
3) On the Upper left, select the Office Button and select the "SAVE AS" Option.
4) In the "SAVE AS" window, locate the directory you found in step 1 above.
5) When you locate the directory, select the file type that you want to use to save your new file. For the sake of argument, save it as an Excel file (any version).
6) When you do, note that the only files in that directory that you see in the "Save As" window are the ones that are of the same file type as the one you're saving. Note that you can't see any of the other ".doc" or ".ppt" files in the window.
THAT'S THE PROBLEM. In prior versions of Office, all of the files in the directory could be seen from the "SAVE AS" window....regardless of file type. This was very handy because when saving a new file, you could use the "SAVE AS" window to search all your directories and put the file in the same folder as others even if they were of a different type.
If on your system you can see of all file types in the "SAVE AS" window, then that gives me hope that there is a setting that will allow mine to function that way.
Let me know what you find.

The latest Office version that Microsoft produced that would show files other than the selected file type was Office 4.3's version of Word. It did so by default would show any file within the target folder. Office 95 I don't have but don't believe it did show all files. Just tested Office 97, 2000, 2002 (XP), 2003 or 2007 and they do not show and can't be made to show all files within the Save or Save As window. They will only show files of the selected type.

Somehow my original question got twisted.
I'm not talking about the "Save as type" drop down list....that works as it always has.
What I'm talking about the "Save As" window. When I open the "Save As" window I want to be able to see all of the files in that directory regardless of their type. This used to be possible in prior versions.
Without that function you have to open another application (Windows Explorer) and locate the directory of interest, or you have to use the "Open" function and locate the directory to see what else is in there. If you have a complicated file path it can be 10 clicks or more that was previously unnecessary.
Unfortunately, I'm finding that a lot in the new version. It's a big disappointment.

Sorry, I just don't see WHY you want to be able to do this. AFAICS there's no point to it...

And continuing my answer, you got a workaround answer by Dennis in your multiposted message in microsoft.public.windows.vista.file_management. In the file name type an asterisk * and press the enter key. All the file types in the target folder will appear. There is no way that I am familiar with to make it happen by default.
If you must put the same message into multiple newsgroups crosspost, don't multipost. Of course you are using the web interface to the newsgroups and that is the worst way to get information. Learn to use a newsreader such as Outlook Express, Microsoft Mail, MS Live Mail or any of the other good newsreaders. That way you will be able to see all the responses to your messages easily and we will be able to read them in context.

Thanks....you're right on Dennis. I mis-read his response. Thanks for repointing me to that.
I wasn't finding an answer in my original post so I thought I'd pose it to a different audience. I'm not aware that it's possible to cross-post. I'll spend some time figuring out how to do that.
Ditto on MS Outlook or another newsreader. Didn't know there are multiple options for participating in this discussion group. Thanks for the help.
