In Word 2007, when I open the Building Blocks Organizer, I notice that the various building blocks are located in either Building Blocks.dotx or in a file called ~WRD4061.tmp. I suspect something has gone awry and that the building blocks should all be in the dotx template rather that the tmp file. Has anyone run across this? Also, is there a way to create a new gallery and name it whatever you want? Thanks,
Ross

Files with names like ~WRD4061.tmp are normally temporary files created by Word and, in normal circumstances, they should be deleted when Word closes. That you have such a file is not, of itself, especially unusual; that you are seeing Building Blocks in it, however, is. Assuming you have not lost any Building Block updates you have made in the past, I would think it safe to delete the file.
I would normally suggest renaming it rather than deleting, just in case you find you did need it after all, but in this case that won't help. If you want to keep it you will have to move it somewhere. Whichever you decide to do, you will need to find the file and it could be in one of half a dozen places, depending on your situation. The most likely location on Vista is C:\Users\(your_userid)\\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Document Building Blocks\1033 (or, on XP, C:\Documents and Settings\(your_userid)\Application Data\Microsoft\Document Building Blocks\1033). If not there please come back and tell me (a) what language your copy of Word is, and (b) whether you are using Shared Building Blocks, and I can give more detail about other possible locations.
As to the second question, no, you cannot create your own galleries although there are several Custom Galleries you can use for your own Building blocks.

Thanks, Tony. Word version is English US. The problem with deleting the file is that so many of the Building Blocks are , inexplicibly, in this file. I do not use Shared Building Blocks. I did find the location: C:\Documents and Settings\Ross Payne\Application Data \Microsoft\Document Building Blocks\1033. Any other ideas?

Are the building blocks in that file duplicates of those in the main building blocks.dotx file? If so, it could be quite a chore manually copying them back - although it could be done more easily with a little VBA.
However, if you don't have any of your own building blocks in there, you can rename the 1033 folder (say, to 1033old) and Word should recreate it from its built-in version.
Even if you do have custom building blocks it might still be easier to get Word to refresh the basic file and then to move your custom ones into the refreshed version.

With the Building Blocks Organizer, you could move the strayed BBs from the temp file to Building Blocks.dotx by editing their Properties.

Good catch, Tony. I went into Building Blocks Organizer, sorted by name, then I spot checked and noticed that they are in fact duplicates. So I think it would be best to simply exit Word and delete the file named ~WRD4061.tmp.
