You could insert a NumWords field somewhere in the document (e.g. preceded by
text like “Number of words: “):

1. Press Ctrl+F9 to insert a set of field braces.

2. Between the braces, type:
NumWords

3. Press F9 to update the field (if this does not toggle field codes, press
Alt+F9).

The field needs to be updated if you edit the document. This happens
automatically when printing if Office button > Display category > Printing
options group > “Update fields before printing” is turned on.
