Using .docx files
"Panic" <smartwit[ at ]home.com> 4/14/2007 9:06:54 PM
I just upgraded to Word 2007. I notice it defaults to save files as .docx.
I would guess that won't be useable by previous versions of Word. But I
note that you can elect to save as a Word 97-2003 compatible document. I
would assume that saves it as a .doc file.

Word 2007 takes a little getting used to but I'm beginning to like it. It
would seem the smart thing to do is to use the default .docx save to retain
the new abilities of Word 2007. But if I wanted to send it by email to
someone or planned to copy it for transfer to another computer I should
reload the .docx file and save a different version as a .doc file.

Any comments?

With Word 2007, there are several ways you can send stuff to other people:
a. use .doc format (if you know they can already read it, why not?), as you
suggest - your approach of saving, re-opening, then re-saving as .doc seems
to me to be the safe approach.
b. use .docx format if you know that the person at the other end has
downloaded and installed the .docx converter that works with Word 2003 and
some other older versions of Word
c. print to .xps format (I think this facility is provided with Office 2007
but it may be in separate downloads. That requires the reader to have a .xps
reader
d. save as .pdf (Acrobat) format, using the "2007 Microsoft Office Add-in:
Microsoft Save as PDF"

You can get these addins etc. at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads

That worked, Peter. I found in Word 2007 that when I clicked on Save As
there was an option to save as a .pdf or .xps. When I clicked on that there
was a link to take me to the MS download area for this option. I downloaded
and installed it. Now when I click on Save As pdf or xps the save as window
appears and defaults to saving as .pdf but that can be changed to .xps if I
wanted to.

I think I'll keep everything as .docx until I need to change to .doc for
other users.

You don't have to change the file format for other users.
Microsoft provide a tool for converting Office Open document for old version
of Office.
This tool will work perfectly from the 2000 version.

The advantage of the Office Open XML is the stability of the files. If you
enconter some problems,, you can try to open the file with Winzip or other
sofware.
After that, the file contents other small files with XLM format, and are
editable with the notepad.

It is quite true that there is a converter, but it is simply good manners to
send documents in a format that the other party can use without having to
download additional software to do so. DOCX will become a standard
eventually, but for the moment it isn't.

We have started a major WordPerfect to Word 2007 project and to get ready
I'm looking into all the ways that we can convert. One of the items I tested
was all the ways I could convert to Word 2007. All in all, found that I
could import the documents 7 different ways. But in most cases what I found
really odd was the number of document that lost there formats between Word
2000 and Word 2007. When saving the same file from Word 2000 to Word 2007
the document format was lost in about all the documents I tested. With this
in mind, I'm not sure if I want to use DOCx. Anyone else run into this
issue?

As you have not said in what way the files lose their format it is difficult
to suggest a solution, however starting with the same templates and template
formats would minimise any changes, but changes are inevitable between
platforms - see http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/TextReflow.htm
..Personally I would put the XML docx format as the only justification to
change to Word 2007 even though it will in the short term make document
exchange with third parties inconvenient.

Re: Using .docx files
"Jeff Mathewson" <jeffwm[ at ]uswest.net> 6/21/2007 1:07:04 PM
I wasn't asking for a solution, but more just a question about the two
versions of Word. Between the two files, Word 2000 and 2007 file formats, I
found that tab, fonts and line spacing were changed. Now this could just be
me..I'm asking if this could or is an issue between the two formats of Word.
The problem I had, and was kind of set back, was when saving the document
from 2000 to 2007 I was expecting the two files to have the same format. In
a converting test where I saved the WordPerfect to document to Word 2000
then from within Word 2007 saved the file as DOCx all three files had a
different page layout look. Page layout meaning, when printing all three
documents, they did not have the same look.

Although in theory they ought to do the same thing, I suppose I would have
slightly more confidence in a process where I used Word 2007 to open Word
2000 documents rather than Word 2000 to save Word 2007 document. But only if
it worked, of course :-)

Something to check is that Word has a whole raft of "Compatibility options"
which let you say, for example, "do line spacing /for this document/ the way
that Word 6 did it". There are even some WordPerfect-related options in
there. I doubt if they will help you all that much, but perhaps worth a
look. However, I wouldn't want to rely on those options long-term even if
they do most of what you need.

Click the Office Button, then choose Word Options->Save and use the "Save

Re: Using .docx files

Peter,

First time around I didn't see this option, but will defiantly look into.
Long-term shouldn't be a problem. Just the current documents.

But the question still stands, are people having any problems saving Word
2007 documents as 2000 document without any formatting loss?

Jeff.
