Cyrillic file names in Word 97
avoran 11/15/2008 1:41:01 PM
Since re-installing my Word 97 on a new computer I am no longer able to open
files with Cyrillic characters names. The Windows XP system handles them fine
and I can open them in other (non Microsoft) programs, just not Word. I have
downloaded Office SR2 and all subsequent updates from
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/downloads/CD010226231033.aspx but they
didn't help.

On my old computer, where I had the complete office 97 suite, I had no
problem with Cyrillic file names.

Makes it awfully tempting to get a pirated version of the whole program,
which is par for the course here in Russia and would be extremely easy to do,
but I'd really rather not...

Was your old computer Russian?
Or the system locale was set to Russian?

Office 97 was designed to still work on Win 9x, so the file system
handling is not Unicode.
You should go with a newer Office version, or change the system locale
to Russian (http://www.mihai-nita.net/article.php?artID=20050611a)

Thank you VERY much. That's exactly what I needed. :)
