Don't even try to number things that way. Instead, disable this feature in AutoFormat As You Type and apply proper outline numbering as described at http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html. For this level, you'll select i, ii, iii numbering and add the desired formatting (parentheses). You may need to increase the indent, and I would advise right-aligning roman numerals so that the space between the numbers and paragraphs is uniform.
