Counting characters in word
BentoT 10/31/2008 2:37:01 PM
Word 2003 had a very useful menu for counting characters. All you needed to
do was to select the text whose characters you wanted to count (with or
without spaces) and to click the "count" button. I've recently changed to
Word 2007 and unfortunately, that menu is nowhere to be found. Instead, every
time I need to count the characters of one word, I must click a button and I
see the whole thing "characters with spaces, characters with no spaces,
lines, etc.". However, it's not as useful as the one before, because you
cannot skip to the next word before clicking OK and restarting the procedure
all over again.
Is there any way of bringing that old menu back? It would save my day!

BentoT,
It would seem to me that you would want the Word Count box to remain open
and to update automatically as you type. I see no feature that would allow
that. you might suggest that to Microsoft. Perhaps an option that would
allow the user to select which statistic would show in the Word button on the
lower left.

I'm no help at all but perhaps I've helped you to define the feature you
would like to have added to Word 2007.

Add Word count to the status bar (at the bottom of the page). That does two
things - it updates as you type, and if you select a block of text it shows
the word count in the block and the total, as in 156/4987

In addition, if you click on the Word Count box in the Status Bar you get
the Character Count box....

It seems that several people have told BentoT this, but that doesn't seem to
be what he wants. It's still just one click--select the word, click on Word
Count, get the number of characters--but the issue is that you have to click
Close before making another selection.

Exactly, Suzanne! Thanks for your help, but I still didn't get the reply I
wanted. It takes me a lot of time selecting every word from a list, for
instance, and having to do click - check - ok a huge number of times. All I
wanted was to select the text, click "count" and see the result instantly
(with or without spaces) like before...

From what you say, I gather you were using the Word Count toolbar in a
previous version. Unfortunately, since Word 2007 doesn't have any toolbars
(much less floating ones), there's no way (that I know of) to replicate this
functionality in Word 2007. There is a Word Count command that can be added
to the QAT, but it just opens the same dialog you get when you click on the
word count in the status bar.

What's especially nice about the Word Count toolbar (which I haven't used)
is that, once you choose a specific item (such as "Characters (no spaces)"),
the display stays on that when you count other selections.

Yes, I was using Word 2003 but decided to upgrade. That's what I've been
doing to count the characters, using the Word Count command in the QAT... I
wasn't sure if that was the only way to count characters, that's why I
decided to ask.

What about Excel? Is there any way of counting characters if you use it to
format text?

Thanks very much for your help.

Fellow MVP Greg Maxey - at my instigation - has been working on an emulation
of the count tool bar for use in Word 2007. It is not perfect, but at least
it looks the same and stays on screen while you select new texts. If you
want a look at the current state of it, I am sure he won't mind sending you
a copy - http://gregmaxey.mvps.org
