EventType officelifeboathang, P1 winword.exe, P2 12.0.6308.5000, P
JeffMcM 12/22/2008 4:09:02 PM
We are experiencing similar issues to others posted here except there does
not seem to be a specifice task being performed when MS Word hangs. The user
simply opens Word and begins typing. After several characters are typed Word
hangs and has to be forced to close. These are new HP desktops running XP SP3
and preinstalled with a PRO/Hybrid version of Office07 from HP and activated
as Office Basic. The repair option in ADD/REMOVE Programs will correct the
issue for 24 to 48 hrs. Uninstall/Reinstall produces the same result. The
issue occurs with Office SP1 installed or not. All settings in Office are
default.

All Help Appreciated

What printer setup do you have? If it is networked printers, try installing
a local printer driver and setting it as the Windows default and test again.

It is a locally attached USB printer.

We must presume that it is fully compatible with Office 2007 - but check on
the support site to make sure it is the latest driver though.

As this is a newly installed PC, is it safe to assume that you have not
installed anything that has installed any add-ins in Office or Word such as
document management, scanning, AV or other utilities? If you have NAV,
disable the Office plug-in option.

If you are sure you have no add-ins, start Word in Safe mode and test the
stability again. From Start, Run, type in

winword /a

and press enter. Word will start in its default install co9ndition. Does it
work OK now?

Nothing I can think of would have an add-in installed. Trend Micro Internet
Security is installed as it is on most all systems we sell. I have reset
Trend to its defalts to insure that those setting weren't causing the issue.
There are 2 other identical systems in this office that are not having any
issues. I'll give the user a call and have them start Word in safe mode as
you suggest and see if that helps.

If starting Word in safe mode fixes the issue, what might be causing it to
begin with?

If it works in Safe Mode, it points to a corrupt normal.dot (in that user's
profile) or an incompatible third party add-in.
