I had to uninstall the trial version and reinstall in order to use my volume licensing key. It was a extra work, but my notebooks remained untouched. I had a custom toolbar that also managed to survive the un/re install.
As Waller suggested, backing your notebooks (use a CD or DVD) is a good practice before starting this process.
