ON2007 Trial Version Installation Problems
jsprague 1/24/2007 3:39:00 PM
Help! I have a long story, but I think some of the details are important.
My computer (especially my ON2007 Beta) was acting weird and I ran Office
Diagnostics. It said I needed to update my product and one disk was
predicting failure, then the webpage told me to resolve other issues and see
if the disk thing resolved. Since I knew my ON Beta exipires Feb 1 anyway, I
decided to upgrade to the newest available. I didn't notice that I could get
the ON 2007 Trial by itself, so downloaded the Office Home and Student 2007
Trial. Then I realized that I no longer had Outlook, so uninstalled Office
Home and Student and installed Office Professional 2007 Trial and then ON
2007 Trial separately. I think I may have had to uninstall and reinstall
Office once due to some errors. ON is another story. I have had problems
from having to cancel download due to Internet difficulties at school to
missing the printer driver completely to having the printer driver work and
then disappear (the printer driver is extremely impt to me because I transfer
all of my pdf and journal files into ON to take notes). I kept running
Office Diagnostics like it told me to do but it didn't help at all. It
didn't occur to me to go into the Add/Remove Programs and try to "repair" it.
Anyway, I didn't think anything of the fact that when I kept uninstalling
and reinstalling, I was getting different product keys each time...so I think
Microsoft thinks I have installed ON 2007 Trial on a bunch of computers! Now
I can install it and it looks like everything is fine, but then the
Activation screen tells me my Trial version is expired. I am freaking out
because I am a veterinary student and have taken ALL of my notes in ON 2007
Beta last semester and this semester and can no longer access them with the
removal of my Beta (I have ON 2003, but understand that the notes can't be
read/modified in the older version). I haven't been able to look at my notes
for 2 days, and I have online quizzes and stuff due really really soon. Can
I fix this? Thanks!

Well, I had a difficult time following your timeline, but, I think I
have a solution for you. You need to go and get the trial code that was
first sent to your email address (the first time you downloaded the
trial. If you are able to search your email via sender, then, you can
search for from:msoffice.us (assuming you use gmail--don't know what the
search code is for any other mail system). I suppose this will only
work if you are a resident of the US. Also, you may run into some
troubles with the fact that you first started with office home and
student, then went to pro, then ON stand alone. I recommend that you
use the code that you got first, then work your way forward (meaning,
more recent codes). The oldest is the best.

Finally, when did you first install the trial? Has it been longer than
a month or so? Let me know, because I have a friend that installed the
trial the very first day possible, and it just stopped working yesterday.

I only started trying to install about day before yesterday...and back before
it said it is expired it said it was good until March.
Also, I had thought the same thing about the codes, but I found a couple of
problems.
*First, I went back to look for the beginning of the codes sent to my e-mail
for the ON installation, but can't see where it identifies which e-mail
applies to which Office product.
*Also, most of the e-mails have codes that are *** out now so I can only see
the last few letters/numbers of the code (and I didn't write the codes down
elsewhere...). I did try going back to one e-mail that had a whole code
displayed (I think this one might have been sent to me but not used b/c I
lost my Internet connection before downloading, and when I went back to the
download page it displayed a different code that I copied and pasted from the
webpage - I thought this was for security purposes or something and it never
ocurred to me they'd think I was on a different computer - I always just
copied and pasted the code displayed on the webpage). The installation
worked, but it still said the product is expired. Any advice on maybe how to
see the older codes?
I currently have Office Professional 2007 Trial (still activated) and
OneNote 2007 Trial (says trial period is expired) installed. It's a shame I
didn't figure out ways to "repair" the problems when I first downloaded
OneNote since I had no problems with activation the first couple times.

That's actually how I accidentally got all of those different keys. Each
time I went to the download page for that same product, I just copied and
pasted the key that was given there, and each time it was different. That's
how I ended up with so many in my e-mail - every time I logged in and
navigated to the OneNote 2007 Trial download page, it sent me a new one. I
wasn't thinking, though, and used the new one each time I reinstalled b/c I
just figured it was a security thing or something. Unfortunately, I think
Microsoft thinks I have OneNote installed on that many computers. I've been
thinking about trying to call someone about it, but I don't even know who at
Microsoft would care to help me out with this...

I don't know if this would work, but you could try a system restore. Go
back to the first day you installed (check your email). This MIGHT
work. Remember, system restore can be found by clicking on start|help
and then find restore my computer to an earlier date, or whatever it is
called.

It doesn't matter, how many keys you've got for the trials - MS keeps no
record of that. The only thing that does matter, is that you've actually used
one of them to activate a product (OneNote) on this particular machine. To
avoid misuse of trials activation ties this key to the machine so if you try
to use any other key on this box it would tell you the trial is expired.

Unfortunately there is no way to fix this apart from finding the original
key you've used to activate OneNote. BTW, you don't need to reinstall every
time to try a new key, go into <Help | Convert> and when prompted enter the
key. If the key is trial it wouldn't convert, but if it's the correct trial
key, after rebooting OneNote you'd have it unlocked.

The mode you are in now should allow you to access all of your notes for
reading/printing and copy/paste.

Re: ON2007 Trial Version Installation Problems
jsprague 1/29/2007 5:24:00 PM
I went back through my e-mail and retried all of the keys that I can see,
including the ones for the Office Suites that I downloaded. I'm almost
positive now I know which is the original key I activated OneNote under
before all of this reinstalling nonsense, but it is in that **** **** ****
etc format and only shows me the last 4 letters/numbers. They e-mailed it to
me through hotmail, and that's the only place I know it's been recorded. I
rarely delete e-mails so I thought the keys would be "safe" in there at least
until I purchased the new 2007 product and had a hard copy of my "permanent"
one. Is there another place I can look it up? Or can I force the e-mail to
show me the key if it originally had the whole thing in there?
I am also confused as to why some of the e-mails show up like that. The
ones for the 2 versions of Office I downloaded (I uninstalled Home and
Student and installed Professional) are still fine.
Thank you, everyone, for your help! I hate having my notes here and there
and everywhere. You are right that I can see my notes (I finally discovered
that I can look at them), but it's stressing me out b/c I need to put new
notes in there and the way that I study involves writing and highlighting
over the notes I took in class...

Re: ON2007 Trial Version Installation Problems
"Jonathan Conning" <jonathan.conning[ at ]gmail.com> 1/29/2007 5:54:50 PM
I've been following this thread with interest, basically because I
also downloaded the 'Student and Home Office 2007' trial in late
December, only to later realize that I really also wanted to have
Outlook 2007 (and I actually need it fairly soon for work reasons).

So how can I download and install Office Professional to replace
the 'Student and Home' installation and get Outlook without failling
into the trap the jsprague seems to be in? In effect what I think I
need to do is:

A) uninstall 'Student and Home Office 2007 Trial
B) Install 'Office 2007 Professional' Trial
C) Install 'Onenote 2007 Trial'

My fear is that if I choose option B and enter a new trial license
code for the new download, Microsoft might cry foul and say that my
trial has expired, as seems to have occurred to jsprague. Is that
right? Does anybody else have a suggestion for how to add Outlook
2007 Trial. I don't see it available as a standalone.

I'd gladly buy an academic release of Office 2007 Professional, but
when I asked a campus rep when they'd be available they said not until
mid to late February (which if experience is any guide, might mean
late March).

Suggestions appreciated. Thanks

The uninstall-install sequence you are planning to do is OK, as all three
products have independent licensing.

! But make sure you have a solid record of the trial keys you use to
activate the products after installation !

If later you decide to change the config once more and install any of the
products you've used to have, then it will require the original key. The
expiration date also will be counted from your very first activation, no
matter how many times you uninstall or actually boot the applicaitons.

I don't think it's possible for any email program to modify a message after
you've received it to obfuscate the product key info - how would it know what
to change? So you probably received it like this, though that would be
extremely strange (at least when I had to install our trials from the Web,
the keys arrived in full text). Can you contact anybody for support on your
email?

I'll ask our licensing people if anything can be done in a case like this
and will post back if I find any solution.

Re: ON2007 Trial Version Installation Problems

I'm in a similar boat, as our school says they will not have the new Office
2007 in until April!
I didn't have any problems when I uninstalled "Home and Student" and
installed "Professional" instead. I have until March on that trial.
I think my problems from OneNote stem from the fact that I was having
problems getting it to work and uninstalled and reinstalled so many times
(and used a different product key each time) that it says my trial has
expired. The big thing is to write those codes down so you don't end up like
me with e-mails that have nothing but **** and the last 4 numbers/letters of
the code I really need to try. :)
Everyone has been very helpful trying to solve my dilemma, and I'm glad
someone else could benefit.

Re: ON2007 Trial Version Installation Problems

Well, I do have e-mails with codes that were sent to me with the full product
keys (definitely the Office Suite ones), but then others that were not
(pretty much OneNote codes I think). I use the free version of hotmail, so I
don't know how much help I can get there.
Darn it, I wouldn't know if the codes were sent to me like that or not.
Unfortunately I always copied and pasted the key from the download webpage to
use to install and didn't check those e-mails until after the fact. I wasn't
even 100% sure at the time that a code from e-mail would work since,
somewhere in my little brain, I was thinking the new code each time was for
security purposes or something. And I assumed the key was sitting in my
e-mail and I could come back to it later (if needed when I get the "real"
product or whatever) once I had the product installed correctly.
Thanks for checking on all of this for me!

After reading your assurances I plunged ahead with the uninstall/

Sounds like your school is using the "student select" academic licensing
plan. That will not be available until April, as they said. Don't
expect it any sooner. You will probably have to purchase it on your own
at a retail price, if you want to be able to edit notes in March.

At this point, I'll have to purchase OneNote at a retail price ASAP if I want
to edit or take new notes even now. Unless I can figure out how to make it
go back to not being "expired!"
I might be able to wait until April for the new Office suite...we'll see.

Unfortunately, bad news :( We cannot restore your product key for you.

You have to either pay for the conversion to retail (should be online now)
or wait for you school to make the product available (btw, in this case
you'll have to uninstall all current apps as I believe schools distribute
Enterprise package).

I'm sorry for this bad experience you've had with trial. We've escalated the
feedback about current product keys design being too rigid. But for now
that's all we can do :(

This string was helpful to go through since I also deleted a free offer by
mistake only a day after installing it....it's long story like jsprague's.

I'll have to figure out which version I will get now...some of my IT pals in
very large organizations here in DC advise against it since the gaps (bugs)
are still being worked out of it, and advise using one of the 2003 versions
for a few more months would be prudent. The trial would have been a good
opportunity to figure this out in practice.

I'd appreciate knowing if anything has changed on this since the last note
on this.

Thanks,

Re: ON2007 Trial Version Installation Problems
Irina Yatsenko (MS) 4/12/2007 2:44:01 PM
The install story is the same as before: you can install the trial multiple
times as long as you keep your original product key. Otherwise you need to
buy the retail version of the product. There are a few various packages
available, each with its own licensing so you need to make sure you buy both
product and licence together. OneNote distributed through trial can be
activated with retail standalone key but not with home and student key, and
not with suit keys from other products.

Re: ON2007 Trial Version Installation Problems
nkwashington 4/12/2007 3:32:00 PM
Thanks for your update Irina. Good news! This morning I tripped upon the
2007 trial file(not named as such, but a mysterious number) in my "download
folder", which I double-clicked, ran the 2007 Trial version of Office. So I
did not use the activation assistant as instructed. Once the program
completed running, it asked for the product key as before (the same as when
one buys them retail), and it took. When I opened Outlook, it even
remembered my Outlook settings from a few days ago that I first installed it.

I'm very pleased with my accidental finding, and just wanted to share in
case it would be of help to others.

Already enjoying the joys/frustrations of the ribbons!
