Your old Hotmail account has probably been forcibly converted to a Live account. It still uses the [ at ]hotmail.com domain for your e-mail address but it is now a Live account. Because Hotmail now has multiple domains for all its account - [ at ]hotmail.com and [ at ]live.com - you are required to specify the domain in your login so it knows to which domain your username applies to find the account. Yahoo Mail did the same recently and added [ at ]ymail.com and [ at ]rocketmail.com to their domains, so now when you login you have to add [ at ]yahoo.com or the other two to complete your username. Without it, Yahoo's login wouldn't know to which domain your username alone would belong.

Yes, you do have a Calendar function in your Hotmail account. In fact, when you click on the Calendar link when using the webmail interface, you have to choose between using their Beta version or the classic version of Calendar. Go try it for yourself. Logon using the webmail interface and notice there is a Calendar either in the left-frame under "Related places" or under the "More" link at the top. The Related Places link to Calendar goes to whichever is your current calendar mode. The More link to Calendar pops up a choice to use the Beta version or the classic one. Perhaps the Outlook Connection add-on doesn't yet support the Beta version of Calendar, so switch back to the classic one.

If you don't use the Calendar provided with your Hotmail account, why do you care if there is an error message saying that you cannot sync Outlook to it? You said "I don't have a calendar in Hotmail" so obviously you didn't know Hotmail included one and you haven't been using it, so you shouldn't care that the add-on cannot sync to it. As long as it syncs to your e-mail folders, that all you apparently expected of it.
