Not all fonts have a euro symbol and if like me you use an old font (Zapf Humanst BT) as your preferred font for printed material, it can create problems. Alternatively you can type the digits 0128 [Numeric Keypad] while holding the Alt key. The symbol can also be inserted via the Insert> Symbol dialog (Word 2003 & prior) or via the Insert Tab - Symbol Group on Word 2007's Ribbon. Additionally, you can assign a keystroke of your choice or set it up as an AutoCorrect item. There may be some variation if you're using a different language version or keyboard other than English. If that's the case post back with specific details & someone will be able to direct you further.
