How to get custom styles onto a custom word 2007 ribbon tab
Al 12/19/2008 11:53:00 AM
I've been converting my company's word 2003 templates into 2007 templates and
using the Office 2007 Custom UI Editor to convert the custom 2003 toolbars
into a custom 2007 ribbon tab.

The whole process so far has been fairly straight forward so far, even
getting macros on the ribbon and assigning custom images to them has been
fairly painless; however I have just hit a problem and was wondering if
someone can help.

In earlier versions of Word (Word 97-2003) you can drag template styles onto
a toolbar so the end user can apply the style at the press of a button, and
our 2003 templates use this feature a lot especially when applying bulleted
or numbered outline lists to text.

The 2007 ribbon has list galleries, the style gallery and even the style
task pane (however list styles now don't appear in the Styles Task Pane),
however our users have requested the style buttons from the 2003 templates be
retained.

Looking at the WordRibbonControls.xls I can find Heading1Apply,
Heading2Apply, Heading3Apply and Heading4Apply commands for the ribbon, but I
can't find a way to get any of our custom styles onto the Ribbon, other than
creating a macro for each style and then assigning the macros to the Ribbon.

Is there an easier way to get Custom styles onto the ribbon that doesn’t
involve any of the galleries, or task panes or macros?

Regards

Al

In the Manage Styles dialog (click the button for it in the Styles task
pane) you can control the visibility and priority of styles and also
indicate which ones are to be Quick Styles (which will be shown on Home tab
of the Ribbon).

Hi Suzanne

TY for the reply, yep knew this one, and when I first built the new Word
2007 templates for my company, I did just that and provided tuition on how
the new templates and more important "the RibbonX" works.

However, like so many other posters have stated, some people just find the
Ribbon too hard to get used to, I must admit it took me some time to get over
my right click addiction in favour of the Ribbon click.

So I have been asked to emulate the old 2003 templates and have one button
for every custom style within the template. This equates to 4 x multilevel
list styles, 3 x body text styles and 5 x table text styles all needed on the
Ribbon and each displaying their 2003 template Icon as being the clickable
button.

Like I said in my first post, the only way I have found to do this so far is
to create a macro for every style and assign the macros to the Ribbon.

Regards

Al
