Installation Office Small Business 2007 transfer problems
Fred_andGinger64 10/19/2008 6:56:01 PM
I purchased a new Sony Vaio last August, last night I accidently spilt some
liquid on the keyboard and now it won't work. I must have a machine for work
and went out and bought a new laptop today. This came pre-installed with
Office Student Version - but I have software I paid for which was pre-loaded
on the Vaio - Office Small Business 2007 with Office Professional 2007 to be
precise. I purchased the software and received a box with no recovery discs
(although I don't know if it would help me to have that now). I went on to
the Microsoft site and downloaded a trial of Office Small Business 2007, but
it will not accept my product key.

How do I run my licenced copy of Office Small Business on the new machine. I
have a backup created by Norton 360, but I don't know how to use it on the
new machine since I don't have Norton 360 on that one - the
registration/licence details are all on the non-functioning machine.

Whish do you have - Office Small Business or Office Pro? Norton and the like
will not help you at this point. You need the discs and if what you bought
was an OEM version, you are going to have to buy it again.

Not sure if the last post went through... I have Office Small Business. Are
you saying that if I didn't order the recovery discs last year when I paid
for a licence, I cannot now order them - and I have to pay for the programme
again as if I never owned it at all?

If you purchased Office SB via the MS Download, Digital River I'd assume,
you have to re visit that site with your details and hope you set the option
for a lockbox so that you can re download again, as you did'nt bother with
ordering the cd's
Other than that
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;326246
All the above assumes you purchased Office SB directly and it wasnt supplied
with your origonal Vaio, as if that was the case it died with your Vaio

Thanks for the information. Everything connected to my computer - receipts,
registration numbers, date of purchase etc. is on the previous computer. I
have a backup file I can't access because the software is on the computer.

I've been able to re-load the software I bought separately (Visio, Project &
OneNote) easily because I have the CD's with me. But because I took advantage
of pre-loaded software which doesn't supply you with a fail-safe by default,
I am faced with having to pay for it again when I've had the 'benefit' of its
use for just over 13 months.

I always thought software piracy was despicable, I can see now why people do
it.

You now state preloaded software, if by that you mean Office SB, then that
means it was an OEM and as such it died with your viao, unless it was a
trial that you purchased a key for.
By Backup file I assume you used the default windows backup, I've never used
this but I understand it is possible to recover any data backup on a new
PC - You'd probably be best posting to a group that supports the old o/s as
to how to do this.
You can also remove the old drive, place it in an external case & connect to
your new PC to access your old data.
Whilst backing up is allway wise its best to backup to a media, or in such
away, that the backup can be accessed by another PC - I prefer third part
backup software, backed up to an external drive
Also a backup of programs is of no help, in recovering programs.
