The 'a' switch is only a test. It starts Word in Safe Mode which starts Word in its default install mode bypassing absolutely everything: templates, macros, add-ins or any type of customisation. Because you can start in Safe mode, you need to follow through and find out what is stopping Word: all you have proved is that Word has nothing wrong with it.
