Use this big space for your question. Is this a form? What kind of fields?

It is a fax template/form with fields to input to, from, etc. I created the
fields using the developer, legacy forms, text form field. We are trying to
make a limited form, would like to only allow the user text form field
entries. Currently when you hit return on this form it adds a new line and we
dont want this to happen.

Thanks

You must click the Protect Document button (on the Developer or the Review tab
of the ribbon) and turn on protection for forms in the resulting task pane.
Alternatively, add the Lock icon to the Quick Access Toolbar and use that.
