It may be that you just need to change the display in the Styles and Formatting task pane from "Available styles" or "Styles in use" to "All styles." Once you've used your new styles, they should be listed at least in "Styles in use." You can also customize style visibility by choosing "Custom..." and checking the styles you want displayed as "Available styles."
