When I try to open an existing document with Word 2003, I get a dialog =
box that reads "this command cannot be performed because a dialog box is =
open... - yada yada yada." How do I stop this from happening?

Close the dialog box! The usual cause of dialog boxes opening behind the
main window is the Office plug-in of Norton AV. Turn off the plug-in.
