is MDB depecrated?
"Nando" <nospam[ at ]no.spam> 5/23/2007 2:37:56 AM
Hi all! I'm quite confused. Is it true that MDB is deprecated? Will
Microsoft release a next Access version? Or will they just move to SQL? If
not, will they continue supporting DAO and Access related technologies?

I have read so many lose fragments. I read that the next version of Windows
will use a SQL-driven file system, so database technology seem to be part of
the OS.

Any replies, or links greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Somewhat. A2007 has a new format called ACCDB which supports new
complex data types which are compatible with SharePoint. However
A2007 also quite nicely supports MDBs.

I don't speak for Microsoft. However I know that MS are working on
the next version.

However keep in mind that SQL Server is a data storage mechanism.
Access, and many other products, allow you access, no pun intended, to
that data. It just so happens that Access is one of the best Rapid
Development tools out there for database apps. Access also allows
you to store data in tables in MDBs or ACCDBs.

Office and Windows are Microsoft's largest revenue streams. Microsoft
is not about to abandon Access any time soon.

That feature is called Win FS presumably Windows File System. Which
didn't make it into Windows Vista.

Aaron, you're going too far. You've been over the line for some time, posting
a lot of lies, but pretending to be someone you're not (someone with a
deservedly better reputation) is vile.

No. It's not true. See:

-8ff2-221769a58ba51033.mspx?mfr=true

Access Data Projects (ADPs)

An Access Data Project is an OLE document file, like the .xls
or.doc file formats. It contains forms, reports, macros, VBA
modules, and a connection string. All tables and queries are
stored in SQL Server. The ADP architecture was designed to create
client-server applications. Because of this, there is a limit to
the number of records that Access returns in any recordset. This
limit is configurable, but you typically must build enough
filtering into your application so that you do not reach the
limit.

Access uses OLEDB to communicate with SQL Server. To provide the
Jet-like cursor behavior desired for desktop applications, Access
implements the Client Data Manager (CDM) as an additional layer
between Access and OLEDB.

Because of the layers required to get from Access to SQL Server in
the ADP architecture, it is often easier to optimize MDB/ACCDB
file solutions. However, there are some scenarios where a report
might be generated significantly faster in an ADP file. To add
these performance improvements and retain the flexibility of SQL
Server, you can build the majority of the application in an MDB or
ACCDB file and have the file load reports from a referenced ADP
file.

One advantage that ADP files have over files in MDB or ACCDB
format is the ability to make design changes to SQL Server
objects. ADP files include graphical designers for tables, views,
stored procedures, functions, and database diagrams.

That clearly shows that MS is deprecating ADPs, not MDBs.

Now, as data stores, the ACCDB is a near cousing of the MDB, because
the new ACE database engine is a fork from the Jet database engine.
It's a different name, but it's really just Jet with a different set
of letters for the file format.

> Will
> Microsoft release a next Access version?

It's already in the works.

> Or will they just move to SQL?

You seem to be confused. Access and SQL Server are not comparable,
as Access is a development platform, and SQL Server is a database
server. Jet is the database engine that Access uses natively and it
is not going away at all. It has received new life with Access 2007
-- previously it was in maintenance mode and was not planned for any
updates except for serious bug and security patches. Now with the
ACE version of Jet, it has new life and will continue to be
developed by the Access team.

> If

DAO also has new life with the ACE. It will be interesting to see if
MS corrects the mistakes with ADO and DAO 3.6, where some new
features of Jet 4 were supported only in ADO and not in DAO.

The WinFS has been abandoned for the foreseeable future by MS.

The only peripheral effect I see on Access/Jet when MS finally gets
around to a database-driven file system is that Jet 4 will likely no
longer be used as the data store for Windows Active Directory. I
doubt it will have any effect at all on programs like Access, which
needs to run on all versions of Windows and needs to have a very
easy-to-use default database engine.

And you obviously believe that, having polluted your own reputation
beyond retrieval, that the only possible way anyone would listen to
what you say is if they mistakenly think that it is someone credible
saying it, instead of you.

Pathetic.
